Okay, I’m going to put you to sleep. Well, hopefully not until after reading this article on how lack of enough sleep is unhealthy.
Not only will it make you sick. It can kill you.
Welcome to another episode of. . .
Black YouTubers from the Negromanosphere, are you still awake? What? You’ve only hosted or moderated four 3-hour long podcasts within a day?
Well, put down the Red Bull and Starsucks coffee. Hold up, but not your computer or phone because we’re not done here yet.
See, according to the Journal of Sleep Research, a recent study earlier this year from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden has revealed some alarming results on our sleeping habits. They monitored more than 40,000 people for over a decade, concluding that not getting adequate hours of rest throughout the week can cause health issues:
- Obesity
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- High blood pressure
- Stroke
- Heart attack
Stay alert
Additionally, for all of our awesome family men reading this, just consider the fate of our children. Would we want them to go on without us, their loving father, due to dozing off from behind the wheel in heavy traffic?
I know I’ve experienced some close calls. Fortunately, I’m still here but I no longer take my health for granted, and that includes being well rested.
However, they suggested making up for lost naptime on the weekends should balance us out. This explains why after hitting the gym daily at 5 am or earlier, that I automatically sleep in a few more extra hours on my two off days. And don’t even get me started on the luggage beneath my eyelids from decades of writing and editing books, screenplays and articles.
Now granted, those researchers focused mostly on those among us whom work five days per week with Saturdays and Sundays off. Long work shifts and frequent mandatory overtime, notwithstanding, I’m certain that our truckers, emergency room physicians, nurses and first responders in blue can just as easily adjust it to fit their own unique, unconventional schedules.
Trouble Sleeping
Nevertheless, you tell me. Are you getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night (or day, depending on your profession)?
In this fast pace, microwave, got-to-have-yesterday Westernized society, I’m willing to guess that most of us don’t. And it’s quite easy to understand why.
Technology, especially within the last 20 years or so, has really revolutionized how we humans interact as well as how little we physically move our bodies. Why even now, as I type this piece, I can feel myself drifting. . . drifting. . . Zzzzzzzzzzzz.
WAKE UP, MARCUS!
I’m up! I’m up!
See what I mean? Do you know what I do to remedy this?

- Drink plenty of fresh water.
- Eat more fruits and veggies.
- Cut out alcohol (well, not entirely but at least by 90 percent or more).
- Say “Goodbye” to all caffeinated products.
- No chicken (too many injected hormones).
- No pork. Oh, how I do miss my all-meat pizzas!
- Stop ingesting dairy (eggs, milk and cheese).
- Cold turkey on junk food.
- No lottery tickets.
Alright, that last one is optional. My point is, I’ve removed most of the things that have kept me up at night but only to fall asleep at inappropriate times during duty hours.

Oh, and by “up,” I don’t mean in the bedroom or backseat of a car rental but from enjoying peaceful sleep. Then again, I do.
Yeah, I forgot to add that to the list of “health issues” due from not getting enough shut eye. Erectile Dysfunction.
There’s nothing funny about trying to put in work with a limp tool. Men from all walks of life can relate to this one.
Likewise, I’m sure our female acquaintances would agree. Only noodles should be dangling, not our manhood.
Of course, naturally increasing our testosterone through proper diet and sleeping are factors here as well.
Just say “No” to ED, along with that list of other man problems, and “Yes” to 40 winks or more.

People are depending on you
Trust. Our family and loved ones need us for as long as possible. So, let’s ensure that we’re keeping our end of the bargain with a little less Netflix and a hell of a lot more chill.
Cool? Now you can log off, and go to sleep!
