You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain”

-Harvey Dent, The Dark Knight

How the mighty have fallen.   It wasn’t all that long ago that Jessie Williams was the toast of the town. It wasn’t all that long ago when he could do no wrong.  Jessie Williams learned that admiration and adulation from black women is fleeting at best, and is contingent on two things that will never change. Those two things are saying and doing what they want. The second that you deviate from, or otherwise don’t go along with whatever it fitting with their agenda or no longer suits their needs, you will be summarily dismissed and cast aside.

Let’s go back a bit.  Almost a year ago on June, 26, 2016 Jessie Williams accepted the Humanitarian Award at the BET awards that night.  During his acceptance speech, he uttered the following words that would propel to can do no wrong status among the sisterhood. “Now this is for the black women, in particular, who have spent their lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves. We can and will do better for you.”

With those relatively few words, Jessie Williams was thrust into the limelight and ascended to the top of the black community.  As a result of his newfound popularity, his stock rose from a relatively unknown or certainly lightly regarded actor on the Grey’s Anatomy to highly sought after Hollywood commodity.

But just as quickly as had become the hero, he’d  learn that he’s live long enough to see himself become the villain, just as Harvey Dent famously told Bruce Wayne in the classic film, The Dark Knight.

He cashed in his newfound fame and higher profile for an upgrade in his personal life. This was the beginning of his descent into villainy, as least as far the sisterhood is concerned. He spurned their adulation, and had the audacity to not know his place and to not be grateful for the position in which they put him. He had the audacity, the unmitigated gall, to trade in his rather plain looking black wife Aryn Drake-Lee, for the magnitudes more attractive, higher profile, white woman, Minka Kelly.

Jessie Williams exercised his right to divorce is wife.  The reason or reasons why can be debated.  My opinion on why he did was spelled out in my article, The Real Lesson Black Women Should Learn From The Jessie Williams Fall From Grace, here on the negromanosphere.com. (https://negromanosphere.com/2017/05/23/real-lesson-black-women-learn-jessie-williams-fall-grace)  If you haven’t read it, check it out.  For the benefit of those who haven’t, I surmised that this happened because his wife is not his assortative mating equal. He is several standard deviations more attractive than she is. As such, their union was always going to be a struggle, if not an outright, abject failure unless she worked on her appearance. She failed to do so, and probably for other reasons as well, he did what most men do.  He got the best woman that his combination of good looks, money, and status would afford him.

Now that he left his wife black wife for a white woman, the same pedestal that the black women put him on, they’re attempting to hang him from.  Jessie Williams for the most part, has remained quiet on the issue. However, things seem to have deteriorated between him and his ex, and now she is using his kids against him, as so many bitter women do when a man moves on.

He took to Entertainment News and had this to say about his ex-wife:

“Aryn restricts my time with the children and decides when, and for how long I may have them. She has rejected, without any reason, each and every request I have made to have the children sleep over at my residence.  On the few days that I have the children, Aryn has insisted that my time with the children be limited during the week to approximately two and half hours per day, despite my requests for more time, including overnights with the children.” He also said, “I am therefore requesting a court order for a joint physical custody parenting plan.”

Once again, he deviated from the plan. He had the audacity to public air the fact that his black wife is keeping him from his children. Now, aren’t these the same women who claim that black men (yes he is biracial but black when convenient for sisters) ain’t shit? Are these not the same women that claim black men don’t want their kids? Yet, here is a man who by all accounts is doing the right thing. Remember, he could have dragged this thing on, but he didn’t. He made the decision to move on from and her and filed for divorce.

What has he gotten for his attempt to do the right thing and have an amicable split with his wife? A big Fuck you, that’s what.  Now he may be famous, but what he is going through is very indicative of what real, everyday men are dealing with.

So, what’s the lesson to be learned from the latest episode in the Jessie Williams saga? It’s very simple. The sisterhood giveth, and the sisterhood taketh away.  So be careful when they praise you today, because they could quite possibly hate you tomorrow.
